Thomas Telford: The Man Who Built Britain

Synopsis
Arguably a greater engineer than Brunel, Telford led the way for Britain to become one of the great engineering nations of the world. Although he worked 200 years ago, scores of his creations still adorn our landscape today and pay testimony to the genius who was the orphan son of a poor shepherd and left school at 14.
At the Menai Strait between Wales and Anglesey he built the longest suspension bridge that had ever been constructed. His Caledonian Canal through Highland Scotland was the greatest canal in the world until Suez was created half a century later. At Pontcysyllte he used cutting edge technology to build a waterway in the sky 130 feet above the valley floor.
