International Women’s Day Concert 2018

Alternative title
BBC Concert Orchestra and Jane Glover: International Women’s Day Concert
Synopsis
A group of academics spent 12 months tracking down the lost music of five forgotten women composers, who range from an 18th-century Viennese child prodigy to an award-winning African-American symphonist. All five women enjoyed recognition for music-making during their lives, but their achievements were often downplayed during their lifetimes and in some cases forgotten after their deaths.

The academics tracked down forgotten pieces of music in the archives, libraries and private collections where they have lain hidden for decades - in some cases unheard since their first performances. The music has now been edited and professionally recorded by the BBC Orchestras and Choirs, as well as soloists and chamber groups from among Radio 3’s New Generation Artists. This radio programme tells the story of the project.
The composers covered are:
Florence B Price (1887-1953): Concert Overture No 2
Marianna Martines (1744-1813): Two arias from the oratorio ‘Sant’ Elena’
Augusta Holmès (1847-1903): Allegro Feroce
Johanna Müller-Hermann (1868-1941): Three Songs
Leokadiya Kashperova (1872-1940): Symphony
