Nuclear Chemistry: Inside the Atom

Alternative title
Inside the Atom
Synopsis
Suitable for GCSE students, this DVD examines the structure and characteristics of the atomic nucleus and surrounding electrons, introducing the concepts of stable and unstable nuclei, nuclear radiation, radioisotopes and their uses, and fission and fusion.

The programme makes extensive use of 3-D animation to deal with the following topics:

-The composition of atoms and their nuclei - structure of nucleus; relative sizes of protons, neutrons and electrons; nuclear structure and the Periodic Table; isotopes of elements.

-Stable and unstable nuclei - characteristics of stable nuclei; how unstable nuclei emit alpha, beta and gamma radiation; detecting and measuring radiation activity and exposure.

-Radioisotopes and their uses - how radioisotopes transform themselves into another element by emitting radiation; process of transmutation (e.g. radium decaying to radon); half-life of radioactive elements (e.g. iodine), and how a half-life is calculated; beneficial uses of radioactivity (e.g. cancer radiotherapy, nuclear energy).

-Fission and fusion - nuclear fission chain reactions; using fission for nuclear energy and problems of radioactive waste; potential of nuclear fusion, but technology still in its infancy (difficulties in getting nuclei to fuse).
