Farewell to the Welfare State

Synopsis
A radical film examining the birth of the welfare system in the UK and its future under the Thatcher government. Archive material is used to show how poor the nation’s health was before the introduction of the N.H.S. and asks if we were returning in that direction. The documentary is an early production of Gateshead-based Trade Films and it was made under the 1982 Workshop Declaration, a Channel 4 initiative to fund and screen films from the ‘alternative’ film and video collectives, more commonly known as Workshops.
