Art, Passion & Power: The Story of the Royal Collection

Synopsis
With over a million works of art and decorative objects which have been collected by kings and queens over the last 500 years, the British Monarchy’s Royal Collection is one of the largest art collections in the world. This four-part BBC series takes a close look at some of its masterpieces and the stories behind them. The collection also offers clues about the obsessions of individual kings and queens: their priorities, their ideas, and their relationship with art.
The first episode, DANGEROUS MAGIC, looks at the works acquired by the founders of the modern Royal Collection: Henry VIII and Charles I.

PARADISE REGAINED follows the Royal Collection from Charles II through to the 18th century and the enlightened purchases of George III.

PALACES AND PLEASUREDOMES reaches the age of the Romantics and looks at the acquisitions by George IV, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and George, Prince of Wales.

MODERN TIMES explores how royal collecting has changed since the days of Queen Victoria and includes examples of contemporary British art from the 1930s and 1940s.
