Atomic Number, Mass Number & Isotopes: Part 1

Synopsis
This lesson covers the structure of the atom and how the atomic number is used to organize the periodic table. It discusses the mass number of an atom and how to transcribe this with the chemical symbol and atomic number. Finally, it explains isotopes and gives examples that show that isotopes exist in nature and give rise to atoms with similar properties but different masses. This is the ninth in a series of 17 volumes covering chemistry’s core topics in detail. Concepts are taught entirely through step-by-step example problems of increasing difficulty.
