Spain’s Secret Conflict

Alternative title: Catalonia, The Next State in Europe?
Synopsis: Made back in 2010, when the conflict between Catalonia and Spain was very little known outside the Spanish State, this short documentary starts with the first independence poll to take place in Catalonia which was held in the small town of Areyns de Munt in 2009 despite being banned by Madrid. This symbolic consultation triggered a movement of similar political events across Catalonia, which culminated in the now widely known independence referendum of October 2017. The film provides a very good overview of the causes of this historically unresolved issue. It features interviews with well-known political, cultural and academic personalities from both sides including former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, former Spanish Vice-president Alfonso Guerra, former Catalan President Jordi Pujol, writers Fernando Sanchez Drago and Matthew Tree, and historians Oriol Junqueras and Paul Preston.
