What Are Atoms Made of?

Synopsis
This programme , aimed at secondary school, uses practical demonstrations and graphics to provide an in-depth overview of the atom and the Periodic Table. It shows the makeup of atoms into protons, neutrons and electrons. The history of Atomic theory and discovery experiments are explained as well as how atoms combine to form elements. It covers:

· Assuming it’s all atoms - How matter is made up of atoms but we can’t see them; indirect evidence and modern Atomic theory- the make up of atoms into protons, neutrons and electrons; the nucleus; shells; ions and isotopes.

· But how did they work it out? - Rutherford’s experiments with alpha particles. Bohr’s studies of valence shells and valency.

· The periodic table: an incredible insight - How Mendeleev developed the Periodic Table by arranging elements according to their mass, valency and common properties. Understanding the Periodic Table and how it is ordered; the chemical symbol; unique Atomic number; atomic weight.

· Valency - A clear explanation of shells and valency.

· How elements combine Early experiments by Lavoisier discovered mass is conserved. Understanding valency in combining elements to make a chemical compound as opposed to a mixture. Ionic bonding and covalent bonding. Understanding a chemical equation.
