Outstanding Supervisors’ Video, The: How to Supervise a Doctorate

Synopsis
This video provides a unique resource for academics new to doctoral supervision, and will help more experienced supervisors to reflect on their practice. ‘The Outstanding Supervisors Video’ has been made by the producers of ‘The PhD Survival Video’ and the widely used ‘Good Viva Video’ (which recently won a prize in the the Learning on Screen Awards 2017).

In this video, three experienced academics, all shortlisted for a national award for Outstanding Research Supervisor, share their ideas and insights about supervising a doctorate and their students explain why they nominated their supervisors for the award.

Topics include:
• judging the right balance between being supportive and challenging
• how the relationship changes as a doctoral project proceeds
• how to take an interest in the whole person, not just the researcher
• how supervision fits into an academic career.

The Outstanding Supervisors Video was produced with help from London School of Economics, University of Warwick and Queen’s University Belfast. It is the eleventh in a series for doctoral students now used in around 80 UK universities.
