Althusser: An Intellectual Adventure
- Synopsis
- This film traces the development of Louis Althusse’s thought and his influence on French philosophers like Lacan, Foucault, Derrida, and Barthes. Featuring footage of the only TV interview he gave (to RAI) the film engages with Althusser’s work on Marxist theory - to which he applied the Freudian concept of overdetermination - and his concept of ideological state apparatuses: institutions and social structures including schools, churches, and families, that serve to reinforce the capitalist state. The film also explores Althusser’s own struggles with mental illness and how he related this to his work.
