Acids and Bases in the Home

Synopsis: Suitable for KS3 students, this DVD introduces acids and bases, and outlines their physical and chemical properties. It deals with the following topics:

· What are acids? - an introduction to the corrosive, sour-tasting nature of acids, their properties when added to water, and how to test for an acid.

What are bases? - the alkaline nature of bases; bitter and slippery to touch; their properties when added to water, and how to test for a base.

· Mixing acids and bases - common acid and alkaline household products are mixed together and tested to illustrate how this produces a neutral reaction forming salt, water and sometimes a gas.
