Bohr’s Model of the Atom

Synopsis
Suitable for GCSE and AS students, this (2006) DVD looks at how theories about the atom have developed, introduces Bohr’s model of the atom and discusses its advantages and disadvantages. The programme deals in turn with:

· Historical developments in atom theories - outlines the atomic theories of Democritus, Dalton, Thompson and Rutherford, leading up to the work of Bohr.

· A brief outline of Bohr’s life - outlines his life and work, and his influence on contemporary society

· Bohr’s model in detail: 1 - Bohr’s First Postulate: electrons orbit in shells with fixed energy around the nucleus; how the number of electrons in each shell is calculated; how the outer shell electrons are involved in chemical bonding; how their valency determines many chemical properties

· Bohr’s model in detail: 2 - Bohr’s Second Postulate: electrons can absorb energy and move into higher energy shells; emission of photons with specific frequency and wavelength.

· Beyond Bohr - flaws in Bohr’s model (e.g. quantifying energy released by different electron shells); how Schrödinger’s quantum mechanics model proposed the existence of electron subshells.
