Treasures 5: The West, 1898 - 1938

Synopsis
10-hour set celebrating the dynamic, gender-bending, ethnically diverse West that flourished in early movies but has never before been seen on video. The forty films contained in this collection present a very different - and much more varied - view of the American West than in the defining sound Westerns which followed. The films include curiosities as well as a handful of masterpieces, particularly MANTRAP (1926), with Clara Bow giving a career-best performance as a flirtatious manicurist in the Canadian backwoods. The set also features travelogues from ten Western states; newsreels about Native Americans and documentaries about such Western subjects as cattle ranching in Santa Monica; riding the rails; how vaqueros made horsehair ropes; the birth of the canned fruit industry; and the beginning of the water wars
