Pas d’Acier, Le, 1925

Synopsis
A source based recreation of Serge Prokofiev and Georgi Yakoulov’s 1925 machine age ballet. Originally choreographed by Léonide Massine, the choreography and staging is here by Millicent Hodson and Kenneth Archer, with set designs by Lesley-Anne Sayers after Yakoulov. The ballet is performed by students of the Princeton University Program in Theatre and Dance, with the score performed by the Princeton University Orchestra under Michael Pratt.

The 2-DVD set includes a complete performance of the ballet, a documentary about its rediscovery, a discussion of Prokofiev’s ballet collaborations, notes on re-sourcing the choreography, and a performance of Prokofiev’s Musical Interlude, composed originally for quintet and here orchestrated by Samuel Becker.

In addition, as documents readable by computer there is a bibliography, an essay by Professor Sean Sayers on the philosophical background to the ballet, and a biography of Yakoulov.
