Synopsis
When Britain abolished slavery in 1834 the government compensated the slave owners for the loss of their ‘property’ with the equivalent of £17bn. The slaves received nothing. In partnership with University College London, historian David Olusoga uncovers Britain’s forgotten slave owners. Examining the compensation records, he reveals the surprising range of people who owned slaves and the sheer scale of the slavery business. Part 1: Profit and Loss.
