Chemical Equations in the Real World
- Synopsis
- Suitable for KS3/4 students, this (2009) chapterised DVD looks at the chemical processes and chemical equations behind the manufacture and/or use of five common products in everyday use:
· Soap - made from sodium/potassium salts of fatty acids; how the chemical structure of the soap molecule and its hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties provide the key to the cleaning power of soap.
· Polystyrene - two components: ‘styrene’ and air; properties of styrene; chemical structure of polystyrene molecule formed by addition polymerization, with gases added to expand the material.
· Aluminium - properties and uses; extraction and purification of aluminium from bauxite using Bayer process, turning alumina into aluminium by smelting based on electrolysis process; recycling aluminium.
· Paint - polymer structure of paint, and the role of resin, solvent and pigment; paint drying by evaporation of solvent or hardening into a tough film when exposed to air.
· Car batteries - batteries based on chemical reactions converted chemical energy into electrical energy; how a lead acid battery works; chemistry of oxidation and reduction reactions. - Language
