Synopsis
This DVD examines the properties and uses of crude oil. It introduces the chemical compounds that exist in crude oil and shows how it is refined into many of the fuels and products used in modern society. The programme makes extensive use of 3-D animation to deal in turn a number of topics, including: what is oil? What are hydrocarbons?
Structure and formulae of alkanes ; Saturated and unsaturated compounds - briefly compared using 3-D animation; Hydrocarbon rings - demonstrates structure (e.g. cyclopentane/ene, cyclohexane/ene, benzene); How were fossil fuels formed? - outline of geological formation of coal and kerogen/crude oil; Extraction and transport of crude oil - locating oilfields, extracting oil, environmental risks; Petroleum refining - outlines process of fractional distillation.
