- The Shedding Light on Atoms series provides an introduction to the world of atoms. Using demonstrations and animations the film explains not only what we know about atoms, but also how we know what we know about atoms. In Episode 1, THE DAWN OF MODERN CHEMISTRY, the programme briefly examines what the ancient Greeks thought atoms were before moving on to the discovery of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the mid-1700s along with an exploration of some of the properties of these gases, including oxygen’s vital role in fire.
