Kazmir Malevich

Synopsis
In 1915 the Russian artist Kazimar Malevich declared a Black Square on a White Background to be the ‘face of the new art ... the first step of pure creation.' He saw his work as a (secular) icon of its time and thus founded a new form of art liberated from objects: Suprematism. A pioneer of geometric abstract art and the originator of avant-garde, Malevich’s painting repudiated nature in favour of abstraction and suggested that it may be read in terms of the Kantian theory of the sublime.

Initially supported by the Bolsheviks, the first comprehensive Malevich retrospective outside Russia was held in Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum in 1989. It is here that director, Barrie Gavin, outlines the artist’s creative phases and his life story. In doing so, he discovers the most diverse ‘isms’ of the 20th Century and celebrates one of the most significant pioneers of abstract art.
