Tar Sands Trilogy
- Synopsis
- These films address the huge environmental impact of the Tar Sands developments in Alberta Canada.
DIRTY OIL (2010): Deep behind-the-scenes into the strip-mined world of Alberta, Canada, where the vast and toxic Tar Sands deposit supplies the U.S. with the majority of its oil. Through the eyes of scientists, big oil officials, politicians, doctors, environmentalists, and aboriginal citizens directly impacted by the largest industrial project on the planet, the filmmakers journey to both sides of the border to see the emotional and irreversible toll this black gold rush fueled by America’s addiction to oil is taking on our planet.
PETROPOLIS (2010). Shot primarily from a helicopter, filmmaker Peter Mettler’s Petropolis offers an unparalleled view of the world’s largest industrial, capital and energy project. Canada’s Tar Sands are an oil reserve the size of England. Extracting the crude oil called bitumen from underneath unspoiled wilderness requires a massive industrialised effort with far-reaching impacts on the land, air, water, and climate. It’s an extraordinary spectacle, whose scope can only be understood from far above. In a hypnotic flight of image and sound, one machine’s perspective upon the choreography of others, suggests a dehumanised world where petroleum’s power is supreme.
H2OIL (2011). This film weaves together a collection of stories of people who are at the front lines of the biggest industrial project in human history: Canada’s tar sands, asking: what is more important, water or oil? Will the quest for profit overshadow efforts to protect public health and the environment in Canada’s richest province? - Language
