National Gallery in Wartime, The

Synopsis
This DVD tells the story of the National Gallery’s war. Days before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, the National Gallery secretly evacuated its collection. Although the paintings were put into storage, the gallery remained a vital part of London life - despite being bombed during the Blitz.

This film contains unique footage of the paintings being moved to their secret locations, a film of Myra Hess giving a wartime concert, interviews with those who experienced these events, as well as previously unseen historical photography.
