Renaissance Faces

Synopsis
Renaissance artists made portraits for many of the same reasons that we do today: to mark important moments in individual lives, in memory of those who are no longer with us, or to promote a public image. This film traces the development of portraits in the 15th and 16th centuries, in northern and southern Europe and asks why they look as they do, and how they were made.

Featuring oil paintings, miniatures, manuscript illustrations, portrait medals, terracotta and marble busts and full-length bronze sculptures, it includes work from artists such as Botticelli, Dürer, van Eyck, Holbein, Raphael and Titian and many more. This DVD also shows the innovations in portraiture in Europe during the Renaissance.
