Consumption

Synopsis
Consumerism pervades American culture, it dominates all aspects of American life, including the work of the country’s artists. CONSUMPTION explores how artists respond to the pervasiveness of consumerism through a look at the work of Barbara Kruger, Michael Ray Charles, Matthew Barney, Andrea Zittel, and Mel Chin. When culture is so much about what we buy, and in some sense, how what we buy comes to give us our sense of self, and when nothing is off limits, from sex to art, how does art respond?

Art: Art in the 21st Century is a series of 24 programmes in which 100 contemporary artists explain their creations, their creative processes, and their perceptions of art.
