Addicted to Pleasure
- Synopsis
- This series explores the history of Britain’s commercial exploitation of sugar, alcohol, opium and tobacco. Presented by actor Brian Cox, the four programmes examine how businessmen, merchants and industrialists saw that there was a fortune to be made by turning luxury commodities into everyday necessities. Travelling from illicit whisky stills in the Highlands of Scotland to the sugar plantations of the Caribbean and Shanghai’s opium dens, Cox discovers the origins of modern vices and reveals how the history of pleasure is also the history of our consumer society.
