Spirit of ‘45, The
- Synopsis
- Director Ken Loach uses film from Britain’s regional and national archives, alongside sound recordings and contemporary interviews to present a portrait of the social changes which took place in post-War Britain: a time when a spirit of optimism and political radicalism led people to believe a better, fairer society was possible. Loach’s film takes in the creation of the welfare state by Clement Attlee’s Labour government, Aneurin Bevan’s National Health Service and the nationalisation of utilities and transport and presents a positive picture of a collective will to change things through the testimony of retired miners, nurses and other workers.
