Encounters in the Natural World
- Synopsis
- This five DVD set contains five documentaries by German filmmaker Werner Herzog. In
ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD (2008) he travels to Antarctica in order to deliver a funny, visually arresting, dreamlike glimpse into Earth’s most mysterious continent. GRIZZLY MAN (2005) is a portrait of wildlife preservationist Timothy Treadwell whose obsession with grizzly bears led to his demise. Herzog’s commentary together with Treadwell’s own footage reveals two very different views of the natural world. THE WHITE DIAMOND (2004) concerns a research mission that went horribly wrong when the aircraft carrying a scientist and his filmmaker friend crashed en route to its destination. Ten years later, the scientist who survived the crash returns to the Amazon canopy where he recalls the tragic accident that claimed his friend’s life. LA SOUFRIERE (1977) tells the remarkable story of a handful of Guadeloupeans who resisted evacuation when a large volcano threatened to destroy their island. Herzog and his camera crew travel to the site of the near-catastrophe to interview those islanders who chose to stay behind and face certain death (although in the event the eruption never happened). Also included is THE FLYING DOCTORS OF EAST AFRICA (1969), a more straightforward documentary short which follows a group of medics who tend to the sparsely inhabited parts of East Africa. - Language
