Synopsis

Featuring contrasting colour film footage of the abandoned site of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, alongside black and white archive material, filmed by both the Allied Forces and the Nazis, Resnais’ work is a powerful and disturbing film essay which achieves its force by never failing to be aware of the inherent problems of any attempt to represent the horrors of the Holocaust.
