Gillian Ayres

Synopsis
This film looks at the career of artist Gillian Ayres covering her abstract paintings of the 1950s, and her involvement in the ‘Situation’ exhibitions of the 60s, which showed large works combining oil and paint using the techniques of action painting. Her work in the sixties was inspired by the hedonism and glamour of that decade: the 1970s saw a return to oil painting as Ayres went on to develop her distinctive colourful style.

TheEYE is a series of interview-based profiles of contemporary visual artists in Britain. Each film provides a survey of an artist’s work and ideas, featuring the artist in discussion and illustrated by sequences of key exhibitions and installations around the world.
