Reichsorchester: The Berlin Philharmonic and the Third Reich
- Synopsis
- This documentary explores the Berlin Philharmonic’s controversial relationship with the Third Reich during 1933 to 1945. Featuring first hand accounts of the time from surviving orchestra members Erich Hartman and Hans Bastiaan, and previously unseen archive material, the film explores how the orchestra was used for propaganda purposes by the Third Reich and how, in exchange for their freedom and a more privileged way of life, the members of the orchestra, without protest following a purge of its Jewish members, played at Nazi party meetings, before and after speeches by Hitler and other leading Nazis and at the 1936 Olympic Games.
