- Synopsis
- Film about the planning, construction, scope and controversial reception of the Pompidou Centre in Paris, presented by Arts writer and lecturer Rosamond Bernier. Many paintings - including works by Matisse, Leger and Bracque - and other works are examined, as is the arts center’s position and impact in the Marais district. Among those interviewed are former presidential wife Mme Pompidou whose husband created Beaubourg; Richard Rogers, the architect who won the international competition for Beaubourg; Pontus Hulton, Director of Modern Art at Beaubourg; Thomas Hess, New York Magazine art critic; Elizabeth Baker, Editor of "Art in America" magazine; architect Philip Johnson who sat on the jury that approved the design, and architect Nick Grimshaw. The film includes footage of the libraries, classrooms and research centres, as well as film of Pierre Boulez conducting a student orchestra at the Centre for Musical Research.
