- Synopsis
- Carl Th. Dreyer’s 1928 film follows the final days of the eponymous heroine as she undergoes the debasement and interrogation that accompanies her trial for charges of heresy, followed by imprisonment and eventual execution at the stake. Regarded as a landmark in cinema history and notable for the intensity of Renée Maria Falconetti’s performance as Joan, the film’s art direction and cinematography - featuring the use of close-ups to make Joan’s suffering seem more intense and the actions of her persecutors more intimidating and grotesque - have ensured that JOAN is a perennial fixture in film critics’ "best ever" lists.
The Masters of Cinema release is available in DVD, Blu-Ray and dual format DVD Blu-Ray. The Blu-Ray edition features the restored high-definition master, presented in the film’s original aspect ratio. The film features the original Danish intertitles with English translations. Extras include the complete "Lo Duca" version of the film - the version (featuring an alternate edit and soundtrack) that circulated in France and around the world for decades before the rediscovery of Dreyer’s "director’s cut"; optional audio tracks: a piano score performed by Japanese silent film composer Mie Yanashita, and a radical accompaniment by American avant-garde musician Loren Connors; a 100 page booklet containing essays, reviews, quotations from Dreyer, Falconetti, and others, and a selection of the production’s set-design blueprints, photographs of physical set-models, and onset stills, and other archival imagery. - Series
