Barcelona
- Synopsis
- Inspired by George Orwell’s "A Homage to Catalonia", Robert Hughes first visited Barcelona in 1968. Twenty-four years later, as the city prepares itself to host the 1992 Olympic Games, Hughes returns to explore the culture, identity, politics and language of Catalunya, as revealed through his own insights as well as interviews with the city’s politicians, architects and artists. Beginning with the celebrations that accompany the festival of the Merce, and taking in perspectives from both ends of the political spectrum, Hughes, sees the city, home of Catalan Modernism and Gaudi, as embodying the Catalan people’s desire for autonomy which now, more than ever, looks towards a changing Europe.
