Voices from Silent Hands
- Synopsis
- A BBC educational video revealing that one in every 1,000 children born in Britain is profoundly deaf. For these children the spoken language is a foreign language that has to be learned by observing lip patterns - a phenomenally difficult task since so many consonants look alike. As an alternative to the daily struggle with English many deaf people choose to communicate in a second language - sign. This programme follows the development of sign language and looks at the arguments for and against this type of communication.
