Three Short Films on Psychoanalysis

Synopsis
Three short films which introduce psychoanalysis, take a look at the British Psychoanalytic Society and cover the basics of training to be an analyst. The first film, WHAT IS PSYCHOANALYSIS, is a short black and white cartoon. The main character uses his psychoanalytic session and the analyst’s contribution to work through a perceived slight at work with the use of free associations and dreams. The film tries to show visually some essential components of the psychoanalytic process including the analytic function, transference, dreams, repetitions and the Oedipal conflict. The second film, BRITISH PSYCHOANALYSIS, attempts to illustrate some of the essentially "British" ingredients in psychoanalysis as it has developed in the British Psychoanalytic Society. The film begins in Freud’s house and traces the development of the discipline in Britain and the contributions of Anna Freud, Klein, Bion and Winnicott. There are contributions from psychoanalysts who trained at the British Society, often filmed in their own consulting rooms, as they describe their impression, from different theoretical perspectives, of their experience of practising psychoanalysis following the British tradition. The final film, TRAINING TO BE A PSYCHOANALYST, follows an aspiring student as he talks to analysts from the Institute of Psychoanalysis about what the training involves, and what life as a modern analyst is actually like.
