Happy People: A Year in Taiga
- Synopsis
- A film profiling a year in the lives of the people in the village of Bakhtin along the Yenisei River in Siberian Taiga. Werner Herzog, who narrates the film, edited down the four hour television documentary by Dmitri Vasyukov, to produce this 90 minute ode to a way of life which, in its essentials, has remained unchanged for centuries. Herzog follows the progress of a hunter from the small village of Bakhtia through four complete seasons, most of which are filled with harsh weather and hostile conditions. With the only way to reach Bakhtia via helicopter or boat, the natives of the village are entirely self-sufficient and face challenges, from bears and mosquitoes in summer to winter temperatures of -54°C.
