Pathe Collection, The: The Battle of Ypres

Synopsis
Released in its entirety for the first time, The BATTLE OF YPRES is the original 1925 British Instructional Films documentary re-enacting scenes from the Battle of Ypres in the actual battle trenches where the campaign was fought The singular term ‘Battle of Ypres’ is slightly misleading: there were various attempts to capture the Belgian town over a four year period and the first, second, third and fourth battles of Ypres are all covered in the film as are the key positions of Mesen, Hill 60 and the Passchendaele Ridge. It can be argued that the film concealed the real horrors of war in order to represent and idealised view reflecting the nobility of the Allies’ cause but as a historical document the film is invaluable. The release comes with two complimentary DVD Bonus Features: YPRES: THE SHELL-SHATTERED CITY OF FLANDERS, 1918 (16 mins) and REMEMBRANCE DAY, YPRES, 1922 (2 mins).
