Oedipus Rex (Edipo Re)

Synopsis
Filmed on location in Morocco, Pasolini’s take on Sophocles’ tragedy reimagines the story in three different eras. The first takes place in 1920s Italy and is shaded with autobiographical tones, depicting an affair between a beautiful bourgeoise and an army officer. The second takes place in a time ‘outside history’ and shows the meat of the story: that of Oedipus’s slaying of his father, marriage to his mother and the enusing tragic consequences. Finally an epilogue depicts Oedipus playing his flute on the streets of present-day Bolgona. Dual format DVD / Blu-Ray release. The Masters of Cinema release includes the original Italian theatrical trailer and a 28-page booklet featuring vintage writing by Pasolini, excerpts from an interview with the director by Oswald Stack about the film, and rare archival imagery.
