Voyages of the Sea Harvesters

Synopsis
Collection of films from the 1930s documenting the working lives of fishermen who worked on the fleets during the 1930s. Originally silent, the films have been enhanced with music scores and commentaries by veteran fishermen themselves. Also features alternative soundtrack with music and sound effects only. FISHING FLEET (1939), filmed by J. Evans Gordon, illustrates Lossiemouth’s fishing industry, showing the Seine fishing method as well as preparations for a voyage and the landing of the catch. In DEEP SEA DAYS (c. 1930) James Blair filmed life on board a Fleetwood trawler as the fishing grounds by St Kilda are selected, the trawl is dropped and the catch landed and cleaned. VOYAGE TO STORNOWAY is the story of the Musselburgh fleet, filmed by Alex Lowe in the 1930s. TOILERS OF THE DEEP (c. 1940, film-maker unknown) follows the lives of a trawler crew as they set out to sea on a nine day trip. Tom Ralston’s colour film RING NET HERRING FISHERMAN was made in the 1950s and is about the catch of a shoal of herring off the Western Isles. The commentary features Ralston himself. The final film NORTH SEA HERRING FLEET (1943) by Aberdeen’s James E. Henderson Ltd. joins the drift net fishermen at sea and the Scottish fisher lassies at Yarmouth.
