Deported, The
- Synopsis
- Ibrahim Tandia from West Africa worked for fourteen years in Paris as a street cleaner. He slept on the floor of an immigrants’ hostel and the money he earned was sent back to his immediate family in Mali and forty other villages.
After fourteen years, Ibrahim’s Carte de Sejour came up for renewal and the local prefecture declined to allow him to stay in France. He was deported.
Nik Mohammed’s father sold family land to pay smugglers $20,000 for Nik to travel to the UK from war-torn Afghanistan. Nik lived in the UK for three years and studied English at the local college. He met and married a young Afghan girl and they secretly married. When Nik tried to register the marriage officially he was arrested, detained for three months and then deported on the third charter flight to leave the UK with failed asylum seekers.
Together these stories build up a picture of the real cost of European deportation policies. Behind the statistics are real people and the documentary captures the disappointment not just of the deportees but also of their families who scraped money together in the hope of giving them a better life. - Language
