Odeon Cavalcade

Synopsis
The Odeon chain of cinemas was notable for the Art Deco style of the buildings themselves. Under the auspices of the chain’s owner Oscar Deutsch, architects Harry Weedon and Cecil Clavering, influenced by Le Corbusier, and other modernist architects, established the Odeon ‘house style’ using a combination of brick, faience, chrome and glass. The colour schemes and distinctive carpets for the cinemas’ interiors were designed by Deutsch’s wife Lily. The film includes a number of clips from films of the period featuring such stars as George Formby.
