All About Chemical Bonding (3 Parts)

Synopsis
The three programmes in this series explain the processes of different types of bonding ionic, covalent and metallic - using accessible language and graphics to illustrate microscopic processes.

IONIC takes a look at why bonding occurs, the Gilbert Lewis theory, the importance of the valence shell, the periodic table, and the common properties of ionic compounds, as well as important terms of ionic bonding, such as electronegativity, Pauling scale and ionization energy.

COVALENT gives a summary of why bonding occurs, before showing how electrons are shared in covalent compounds. The programme also looks at how the geometry of molecules is predicted by the Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion theory, the two types of weak forces of attraction between molecules, dipole interactions and dispersion forces, and covalent network solids which are formed from carbon atoms.

METALLIC discusses the ‘sea’ of electrons which surround metals and how this explains their many properties, such as their shine and their ability to conduct electricity and heat. Also introduced are the different types of geometric arrangements, including body-centred cubic, face-centred cubic and hexagonal close-packing.
