Nobel Textiles: Marrying Scientific Discovery to Design (5 Parts)

Synopsis
The "Nobel Textiles" film series show a journey whose origins are scientific discoveries and whose destination is design. In this project, based at Central St Martin’s College Art and sponsored by the MRC, five textile designers are paired with five Nobel Prize winners to develop textiles which are inspired by the scientists’ discoveries. The films follow the pairs during their research, showing their interactions, the differences and similarities between their working methods, and the development and creation of the textiles. The completed designs range from self-destroying garden textiles to a collection of clothing which reflects the relationship between internal and external body fat. How important are happy accidents to both design and scientific discovery? And how do you make a documentary about a designer who wants to stay anonymous, or a worm who’s too small to film? The scientists involved in the project are Sir Peter Mansfield, Sir John Sulston, Sir Tim Hunt, Sir John Walker and Sir Aaron Klug.
