Memory: Mind’s Storehouse, The

Synopsis
This film opens the door onto the way our brain encodes, stores, processes and retrieves information. Including comments from Loftus and Shiffrin we learn how vital memory is and how it can be affected by experience and physical damage. Starting with an explanation of the multi-store model and moving on to explain Ebinghaus’ theory of the effect on memory of processing, viewers follow key developments in our understanding of memory. The case study of HM explores memory as a biological function within the hippocampus and includes the role of amygdala.

Elizabeth Loftus talks about her research into changes to memory and why she challenges Freudian beliefs in repressed memories. Her work is key to the understanding of the reliability of eyewitness testimonies, especially in legal cases.
