Sncc Fiftieth Anniversary Conference

Synopsis
This 38 volume DVD set is a video recording of the 50+ hours of plenary sessions, panel discussions and cultural programmes that took place at the 50th anniversary conference in 2010 of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), an organisation which formed the vanguard of the Civil Rights Movement in the USA. The SNCC became a proving ground for many of the ideas and leaders who galvanized African Americans over the next half-century. Hundreds of SNCC veterans and supporters attended the conference and amongst those giving presentations were U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Cong. John Lewis, Harry Belafonte, Danny Glover, Bernice Johnson Reagan and many others involved in the movement.

SNCC’s history of sit-ins, freedom rides, and protests of segregation in public spaces is well documented. But most of SNCC’s story is not known, thus an important component of the 50th anniversary conference was to begin the job of telling the full story of the organisation. This DVD collection is unique not only in its comprehensiveness, but also because it features an unprecedented number of SNCC veterans publicly examining their Movement experiences. Many of these veterans are not usually encountered in the Civil Rights Movement canon.
