Letter to the World

Synopsis
Commissioned for the Emily Dickinson International Society Conference, Oxford, in 2010. The film is designed to interpret some of the poet’s tropes including her microscopic representation of the outdoors Nature and Garden ‘Convicted could we be - Of our Minutiae, - The smallest citizen that flies - Has more integrity’ and her Imperial role-play within safe domestic space ‘I touched the Universe - And back it slid - and I alone - A speck upon a Ball - Went out upon Circumference - Beyond the Dip of Bell’. Visual influences from Dickinson’s era including cartography, costume, daguerreotypes, and optical devices such as magic lanterns and other early lens technology are used to enhance the sense of scale and location. The film combines shadow puppetry and multiplane photography with human and object pixillation.
