Sectioned/Mental: A History of the Madhouse

Alternative title
Sectioned and Mental: A History of the Madhouse
Synopsis
Two 60-minute programmes that delve into the challenging subject of mental health.
SECTIONED raises crucial questions about the way we as a society perceive and treat mental illness. The programme follows the journeys of three men with long-term mental health problems who have been detained under the Mental Health Act (a process know by many as ‘sectioning’ or ‘being sectioned’) in Nottingham. Filmed over several months, the documentary follows them as they strive to leave the mental health system behind for good and regain control of their lives.

MENTAL: A HISTORY OF THE MADHOUSE tells the story of the closure of Britain’s mental asylums, through the testimonies of those who lived and worked in them. Today, most users of mental health services live out in the community and the asylums have all but disappeared. The documentary explores this revolution about society’s changing attitude to mental illness over the last sixty years.
With testimonies from patients, doctors and psychiatric nurses, the film uncovers the extraordinary experiences spawned by the asylums. The programme focuses in particular on High Royds Hospital near Leeds which closed in 2003. But what High Royds and the rest really leave behind are the lives they transformed.

NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
