Rameau Project, The

Synopsis
The results of a four-year development process by The Opera Project, THE RAMEAU PROJECT is a sprawling, multi-layered music theatre work for nine performers, featuring Kellaway’s "re-imaginings" of the music of Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). Revelling in the sometime grandeur, delicacy, complexity and underlying wit of the French Baroque, it employs seductive improvisations on a complex layering of sophisticated deceits. Presented by Performance Space at CarrriageWorks, Sydney, August 2009, the centre of this work was not a Rameau opera but Genet’s play ‘The Maids’ supplemented by texts from other sources. The text-based scenes were punctuated by pieces largely from Rameau cantatas scored by Kellaway for two violins, two cellos, double bass, piano and singer Annette Tesoriero, who doubled as the maids’ Madame, voice-off and elegantly fulfilled a range other functions.
