Seven Ages of Britain
- Synopsis
- A series in which David Dimbleby tells the story of Britain through an incredible collection of treasures including painted images and monuments of stone and gold, religious relics as well as weapons of war, instruments of science and works of art. Often they are objects of beauty and craftsmanship, but sometimes they are simple, everyday things, which have a powerful story to tell.
From the Iron Age to the present, Britain’s art has been a mirror to the nation, capturing who we are and bearing witness to the defining events of each era. From the Wilton Diptych to Francis Bacon, Beowulf to 1984, the dome of St Paul’s to the Crown Jewels, David seeks out the very best of British art and craftsmanship, celebrating the famous as well as discovering some of the most extraordinary forgotten treasures. His journey takes him way beyond British shores as he tracks down some of our most brilliant creations lost to us over the ages by accident of history. In each case, the series investigates how these focal points reflected, and even shaped, the culture of their age.
Packed with tales of heroism and villainy, connections are made between past and present, allowing us to see our modern age in an entirely new way. - Language
