Massive Dipper Dredgers

Synopsis
Hydraulic excavators play a crucial role in many port expansion and deepening projects. Bolted to huge floating pontoons, the excavator arm digs up even the toughest rock and clay from the murky depths. It is then loaded into barges. The video shows the largest examples from around the world beginning in the Gulf of Bothnia, the huge expanse of water that separates Finland from Sweden. Here a couple of the biggest Hitachi backhoe dredgers are working round the clock just off the Finnish side. It is a port expansion project that has to be finished before the onset of the Arctic winter. In the UK, the expansion of Felixstowe container port has demanded the use of similarly massive machinery. At the opposite end of the scale, the video includes an example of small river dredging.
