Synopsis
This two-disc DVD collection brings together over five hours of short films exploring the lives of the British coal miner. Remastered drama-documentaries, cartoons and news footage, all produced by the National Coal Board Film Unit (1947-1984), tell the stories of the miners, their families and communities. The broad range of contents include dozens of items from Mining Review, the industry cinemagazine, collected on the first disc. Disc two titles, along with Richard Mason’s celebrated PORTRAIT OF A MINER (1966) and the animated HANDS, KNEES AND BUMPS A DAISY (1969) include: SONGS OF THE COALFIELDS (1964); BIG JOB (1965); NOBODY’S FACE (1966); THE FIRST ADVENTURES OF ‘THUD AND BLUNDER’ (1964); WHAT ABOUT THAT JOB? (Case Studies For Management no. 1) (1970); MAN FAILURE (1971); I’LL SEE YOU (Too Late Now no. 2) (1976); YOU PICK THE MOMENT (Too Late Now no. 4) (1976); MINERS (1976) and 40 YEARS ON (1978). Extras include feature an illustrated booklet with new essays and film notes including contributions by BILLY ELLIOT writer Lee Hall.
